UC Irvine Women's Studies presents the second year of its series on keywords--contested terms with overlapping, sometimes catachretic, meanings that recur in various and divergent contexts. We are drawing upon the framework developed by Raymond Williams in his Keywords project. We began our series in 2004-2005 with a critical engagement with the terms "Embedded," "Regulation," and "Area." We are continuing this year with three more terms, "Offshore" being the first one we address in fall 2005.

The topic for December 7, 2005 is "Offshore" - as both verb and noun, as a site and a process, in which transnational and national markets, labor, finance and goods perform gendered work, and in which public and private, national and international, domestic and foreign all are key constructs. Panelists will help us reflect on its constitution, its diverse manifestations (especially in U.S. law, international law, or any other legal formation), and forms of conformity and/or contestation. Of course, since this term often gets addressed in ways in which gender and sexuality are erased, we hope we can bring these back into the discussion.
